I used Hammerite on my floors. This is a very hard paint that can be
used directly on rust (not loose rust obviously). I used a wire brush
in my drill to clean off the loose rust then painted it with Hammerite
of approximately the same colour as the body (after all, who is going
to see it?).
Hammerite can be used directly on metal, needs no primer, topcoat etc.
Only difficulty is that if you want to put more than one coat, each
coat must follow the prior coat within a certain (maximum) time
Not sure if it is available in the US though??
