Simon,

The article Ulix Goetsch posted was correct.

All over the world Aviation Gas has the same components (At least I
assume that!)
For piston engines Aviation Gas is abbreviated and sold as: 
AVGAS 100 LL

100 is the octane number, which is higher than all premium types of
gasoline I know. 
LL means Low Lead, introduced in 1974 or so, but this means still a
lot more than any leaded gasoline for cars!

The reason for it that the piston engines used in most small aircraft
(Lycoming) are developed in the '40s - and practically not improved
since (sorry, my opinion).
So the BMC B engine is compared to that a very modern engine.

I think that it wouldn't hurt to 'coddle' your valves once in a while
with Avgas.
