That Oil "thingy!'

        I've been reading with interest this thread on spark plug or 
engine removal!  Someone suggested that removal of that aluminum 
attachment that shifts the position of the oil filter up and away from 
the engine about four inches, (10cm.)  I like this idea, but does anyone 
know what the purpose of this attachment is?
