A few members of the Texas MG Register caravaned to Waxahachie, Texas this
morning to encourage the lone LBC entered in the Great American Race. Andrew
Paternall, driver, and Tim Bayley, navigator, arrived in Dallas, Texas
yesterday afternoon where they overnighted before resuming the race in their
1939 M.G. TB. The M.G. was at that time running 2nd place in their class on
the journey from Ottawa, Canada to Mexico City.
Upon arriving in Waxahachie the two immediately ran from their car to the
group of MGs awaiting them, anxious to see the club cars and talk M.G.. This
grueling trip has not diminished their enthusiasm for MGs the slightest bit.
Club members drove a '35 PA, 54&55 TFs, and a TR3B(?) to Waxahachie.
In Waxahachie the Texas M.G. Register presented Andrew and Tim with TMGR
embroidered shirts and caps. Some members of the club met the M.G. racers in
Dallas Saturday evening where they presented the two with lapel pins
resembling miniature Texas M.G. Register car badges.
The M.G. was one of the featured cars being filmed by a crew from ESPN. The
M.G. faces its hottest part of the trip the next two days through Texas where
temperatures are expected to be near 100 degrees.
The Great American Race has been run by an M.G. 18/80 and a J2 in years past
but this could be the first time an M.G. could win the race if all goes well
for Andrew and Tim.
