John, this is a common source of leaks on T types and on my SA. I fabbed an
o-ring on the SA which has been partially successful but don't remember the
details. This is a subject for discussion right now on the T-ABC list....Here
is what one guy said:
As a matter of fact, I have recently rigged up a solution, but haven't tested
it
yet. You will require a short piece of 3/4" brass bar, and an O ring 3/8" ID,
1/2" OD. Here's how you do it.

Mount the speedo pinion housing on a lathe, and drill the threaded end that
the
cable mounts on, to 17/32" diameter, 1 1/4" deep.

Fabricate a sleeve, 7/16" ID, .528" OD. At one end of the sleeve, leave a
flange
.635" dia. X .050" thick. The length of this sleeve is set as follows. Push
the
O ring, followed by the sleeve over the pinion shaft and down to the bottom of
the recess that you have drilled in the housing. There should be about a .005"
gap between the flange on the sleeve, and the threaded end of the housing.
This
will allow for a slight crush on the O ring when the cable end is tightened
onto
the housing.

As I said, I haven't got the car out to test it yet, as I'm still dealing with
some other issues. If you try it before I do, let us know if it works!

This is TATerry again.......I think originally there was a felt washer in
the knurled nut to slow down the leak.....you could also wrap your exhaust
pipe with some of that header wrapping tape....

Good Luck
Terry
