Fitting Starter

What is the correct way to fit a starter to the flywheel on a TD? How do you
know if it is not engaging properly, like barely grabbing the tips of the
gear teeth? I have checked the workshop manual but cannot find anything
about the starter other than electrical.  Thanks for the replies.
