Ted:
Either running the pump with a drill, or running the engine without any
coolant in the pump is a good idea to seat the pump seal. There's still
some water in the block, unless you drained it besides the radiator.
So, a short run of about a 30 seconds won't hurt the engine. Just
done't rev it up so it doesn't heat up so fast. Or, alternatively,
remove the spark plugs and crank the engine in several 10 second bursts
with a 20 second pause between each one.
