| Scott:
As you may know, the most expensive items on your list are quite often
the ones in the worst shape on a used transmission.
Even if you happen to get a used transmission in fair shape, it should
be rebuilt with:
-Sliding hub, 1st/2nd gear. (new style without the groove)
-Layshaft (not the gear)
-Layshaft thrust washers
I would be interested in knowing what happened to your old transmission.
In the mid 70's I rebuilt mine replacing the laygear, first gear,
Sliding hub for 1st/2nd gear, layshaft, and the thrust washers: all of
new manufacture except possibly the first gear. That might have been a
very good used one. About ten years ago when downshifting from 3rd to
second at about 2000 RPM for a stop sign in town, BANG. Dissasembley
showed the laygear had lost teeth, the second gear had lost teeth, and a
boss in the case where the layshaft slips into the case at one end had a
crack. I don't know what caused the problem. The crack in the boss
causing missalingment of the gears, or the laygear shattering.
