I had a similar problem but not so terminal,  bad misfiring on hard
accelleration, poor performance. Touch the coil accidentally with my hand
one day, it was so hot that I had a burn. Turned out to be the wrong coil
 a modern one where you need a ballast resistor ). Fitted the correct coil
and problem solved.
