Actually, if you flash the genny, the old MG won't care if you reversed the polarity. My TB loves it's negative ground!

Just for grins, check to see that you hooked up the battery correctly. With an electrical system as simple as an old M.G., most things may function properly for a short period even with polarity reversed. The regulator would probably be the first to go. With luck (and thanks to your master disconnect!) no permanent damage will have been done.

dear listers:

the F3 magna has been resting quietly for about 9 months so I thought it would
be a good idea to start her up and circulate some oil.

the battery is a 12 volt optima but was low on charge. so I trickle charged
it overnite and it had plenty of juice today. it spun the starter until oil
pressure showed good , flicked the ignition switch to ON and she fired up
nicely. but the ammeter was struggling to come up to zero even with good
revs. of the engine!

then I noted (1)the ignition light was illuminated with the key in the OFF
position . ???

and (2) the ignition light goes off with the key in the ON position. ( engine
not started ). ???

(3) with all switches OFF and the key in the OFF position the Ammeter is
pegged at 20 amps discharge !! ??

I have a master disconnect on the battery so could switch it on and off to
test the above situations.
I'm thinking it might be that the ignition switch could have an intenal fault.
but how do you account for the massive discharge? nothing seems to be
lighting up or smoking.. but I have been afraid to leave the battery connected
for more than a few seconds .

btw: all the lamps function normally except the brake lights which I think is
the brakelight switch adjustment/activating spring... will take a better look
at that tomorrow.

in the meantime I would surely appreciate your thoughts.

best regards, mickey in phoenix
