I have had a few attempts over the years (now, I do not want any of you to be
so rude as to ask how many years) to get confirmation about the use of
stainless steel spokes on MG Racing wheels in 1930's. Or were they wheels
used on MG cars. I suppose it depends if you are standing on your head in
Australia or on your feet in UK/Europe.
Well, what can any of you tell me.
I know many of the cars that were raced have had their history closely
investigated & many have spoken to previous owners & some to the original
owners.
Who then can confirm if wheels used in competition had stainless steel
spokes.
I certainly was told that they did by some of the old factory hands in 1963.
I must admit I cannot remember whether it was Ces Cousins or Syd Enever (who
were both enjoying a drink) who said that was indeed the case. The use of
stainless steel spokes & extra tension was also confirmed by Henry Stone.
But I am also pretty sure Mike Hawke told me he had not heard of this & I also
seem to remember that Gerhard Maier was surprised to have my query.
Again, I must add that the R-type wheels I have with duralium rims were not
stainless spoked. But then the wheels were not made by Dunlop or even made in
UK, so it does not mean much.
It is a very important issue for me as I have a strange P-type with a strange
chassis number and other strange features such as no camber in the front axle,
less than standard leaves in the springs AND MUCH, MUCH More. When I de
spoked the wheels, they had stainless spokes.
So lets scratch the old head & see what you think.
