Dennis....put the nuts back on and leave them a little loose, then bang on
the nut until the slack is taken up, then repeat the process until you have
it ready to pull out.  Its a tapered pin......no threads......heat as a last
resort.....

The tapered pin should be driven to the rear of the car  ( if it was
assembled correctly ).  The larger nut is at the fat/non tapered  part of
the pin so it was probably at the rear and also serves  as a steering stop.
I would not use heat. A press works well if the axle is off the car.
