Gentlemen
Does anyone know what oil pressure we would expect to read at the brass plug
on the RH front of the cylinder head on a P-type? I used to think about 5psi,
and certainly, what I think is a 3-5psi pressure switch worked my oil pressure
warning light OK till the engine wore and the guage oil pressure dropped:
after the rebuild however I'm only seeing about 2-2.5 at tickover (havn't run
the engine faster than that yet). There doesn't seem to be as much oil around
the head as I remember seeeing before, but perhaps this is because it's not
pouring out through slack rocker bushes, etc.
Philip Smith's 'Tuning and Maintainance of MGs' shows the restrictor pin
dimensions as 0.248 dia with a flat 0.221 wide, which equates to a thickness
across the D of 0.182. Our pin however measures 0.216 across the D, hence the
flat is 0.165. Thus ours gives approx half as much space for the oil to flow.
However it's worked OK for the thirty years we've had the car, and it doesn't
look home-made.
Does anyone have another source of dimensions for the pin?
