Thanks for the suggestions and input so far.

I am using 140wt gear oil. The box is full. This morning, as a last resort to 
adjustments, I removed the clutch pedal adjustment/stop bolt. Still gave the 
same results.

As Bob, also, said I'm still suspecting that spigot bearing. Though I still 
have doubts about it, it is a sealed bearing.

Any other comments gratefully received.
