I can't say for sure (as I've never actually dealt with it), but as I  
understand it, the other caveat is that the motor has be of the same  
year as the body, or newer. Then it has to meet the smog standards for  
the year that it was made (the engine).

I've been toying with the idea of putting a small 2 liter mitsubishi  
diesel in my eclipse for near half a decade... but I am still partial  
to the 7000 rpm powerband of the 2.0 turbo, and it still get's 25+ mpg  
most the time.
