I was one of the "flag boys" in grade school, oh so many years ago.
We got great privileges: Go out to the flag pole each morning to
raise the flag, leave the last class of the day a couple of minutes
early (so we'd be done in time to catch the bus for home) to lower
the flag (always slowly, with pride and honor) and then fold it
correctly. And best of all was when it'd start raining during the
day -- Jim Lundin (my buddy and the other flag boy) and I would get
to run like hell out of the classroom shouting "Rain! Gotta get the
flag!", run down the hall and out to the flagpole, and bring the flag
down and into the building before it got soaked. We usually
succeeded -- and even if we got wet, it was okay -- we were the flag
boys, and we were something special.

So -- here we are, some fifty years later -- you know, I never served
in the military, but the flag flies off our front deck just about
every day of the year. I put it up before I leave the house, and
don't take it down 'til bedtime (unless it's raining, of course).
Why do I do it? Because lots of folks did their damndest to give me
the privilege of flying the flag whenever the hell I want to do so.

It's the least I can do to thank them for what they did for me.
