Lead Soldering

I've always thought of soldering in terms of copper tubing, then I realized 
that everytime I solder electrical connections it involved copper wire and 
terminals, which I don't think are always made of copper.  Exactly what metals 
can be soldered using regular resin core soldering wire.  Copper to steel 
alloy?  What about aluminum tubing?  Brass for sure? Bronze?
