Richard, I just finished reading the July 1949 issue of Hot Rod ( no the mail
is not that slow in Indiana, I'm just a slow reader! ) and yes your right the
engines are supported by the exhaust stacks. The idea may have come from the
ford factory engine stands as they supported the engine from the exhaust ports
so the transmission can be mounted to the engine with both units on the stand.
Also a good point here is that the pre 1949 engine should NEVER be supported by
the bell-housing bolts alone, as on contempery engine stands. The extended
block flange WILL fail and your fine flathead will be on the floor broken and
hopefully not your feet too. This truck was built by kentz & Leslie the solid
mounting was in conjunction with the mounting of the banjo portion of the rear
axle that was converted to a swing axle via two ford torque tube housings and
u-joints. This job was well done, no slop here.
