Yes, one certainly wouldn't use a multiple V- belt drive these days
unless the rule book said it was necessary.

success. So, yes, the individual pulleys would work but it added more
parts and labor.
Yet, with the advent of wide-cogged belts, the double and triple belt
drives went the way of the dinosaur. Much to the dismay of the local
parts store...we would walk into the store and buy 25 belts at a time,
trying to find 2 or 3 that were the same length.

If you ran separate idler pulleys, it seems like you wouldn't need to
have exactly the same dimension belts. I haven't tried this but it seems
logical-- maybe someone else has tried individual idlers?

Aron, your choice of cog belt is a wise decision. Back in the 60/70's
we used v belts, 2 or 3 at a time to run blowers. The challenge was
finding belts that were of identical dimensions. More trouble than you
can imagine.
I didn't see a reference to vintage transmission either.
