For a short run I'd guess an chest full of ice would do. If I ever see
one of those surplus vests again in the right size, I'll buy one and
give it a try.

Neil, Back in the 70"s we tried these in NASCAR. They were called KOOL
SUITS if I remember right. Only real problem we had was the cooling unit
kept breaking down. When that happened it would pump warm, then hot,
then very hot liquid. After the first race Benny Parsons unit broke
down he said he felt like a pig at a bar-b-que. I'm sure that in this
day and age we could make a unit that would live for a whole race. For a
short Bonneville run it would not have to be much.
