You'll need the detective skills of Sherlock Holmes-- I saw that film in the
late Fifties (!) and it was produced by the British Shell Oil Company.

I have studied both Schlieren and shadograph techniques  (mainly in
connection with convective heat-flow analysis)-- but I don't remember either
of those films.

Those techniques can also be useful for visualizing the shift from laminar
to turbulent boundary layer-- that critical step-change in aero pressure
that Joe Lance so astutely pointed-out.

Might be fun for some of us if we could locate a copy of those old films.  I
have some connections at Shell-- maybe they can put me on the right path.
