The reasons behind why people race is complex and not easy to explain to
someone who has no experience in what it's all about. Racing is a sensual
experience-- you can feel the "G" forces and vibration, hear the engine
exhaust noise, smell the rubber smoke and hot oil vapor, and see the scenery
flashing by you, and you feel an experience of heightened sensation.
George Leigh- Mallory got tired of people asking him why men climbed
mountains. His famous reply was "Because they are there." In other words, he
was saying to the person who asked, "You wouldn't understand if I tried to
explain it."
Steve McQueen said it best in the movie "Le Mans": "Racing is
living....everything else is just waiting." Of course, the good ol' boy
stock car used to say: "If you ain't skeerd, you ain't drivin' fast 'nuf"
You may not make it to the Salt before you graduate but you can get a bit of
an idea of what racing is by going out to a drag strip, sprint car or NASCAR
track, or a sports car road race. You can get a small dose of the racing
fever there.
Good luck on your thesis. Remember Sir Christopher Wren-- that name might be
on the test.

my name is christian calemmo and i am a student at philadelphia university
currently doing my thesis in architecture. my thesis deals with
architecture that can emerge from rituals. i have chosen the flats/ speed
week as my site and ritual for my project. since i can not make it to the
flats before i graduate i am trying to find out as much information about
speed week as possible. i was wondering if you could explain to me an
itinerary of daily events, any special activities that take place, some of
the infrastructure that is required to make speed week happen. the more i
know about the experiences and perspectives of people who race on the flats
the more it will benefit my thesis project. i was also wondering if people
are permitted to stay on the flats over night during speed week. i am also
interested in the starting line procession. what is it like and how is it
set up?
if you could also recomend me (via email) to someone who has raced there so
i could understand a racers perspective of driving at such a high rate of
speed. your information would be extremely beneficial.
