Hi Bryan, good question. A "3/8 x 3/8 Merc" (or Ford, made no
difference) was the popular size in the Flathead Era, 3-3/8" bore x
4-1/8" stroke. The alliteration seems screwy but the reference was to
the bore size and the fact that the stroke was 3/8" longer than stock
Ford 3-3/4". 3/8 x 3/8 gave you 296 cubic inches and if you had the
rest of the kit, Edelbrock heads, ForgeTrue pistons, a hot Isky cam,
three 97 carbs, headers, etc., such a mill would probably run your '40
Ford Deluxe Coupe an honest 120 mph and you could still drive it on the
street!
If you were able to put an Ardun setup on it, wow! Watch out. But the
Ardun heads would be so tight to your inner fender panels I'm not sure
you'd be able to get the valve covers off for a tappet adjustment, on
your good old '40.

Those were the days, but people can still enjoy such equipment right
now. It's not too late! Cheers Bill
