Greetings to the list from this "lurker"
In the 50's and 60's,Davis-Monthan AFB near Tucson,Arizona allowed the
use of one of its runways one Sunday a month for a drag race event.
I was a 22 year old army sargent stationed 75 miles south at
Ft.Huachuca.I was present on an October sunday in 1957 when Red Greth
set a new top speed record of 169.11mph to eclipse the existing record
then held by Emory Cook and Cliff Bedwell.
As the old timers know, the cars in those days were direct drive, high
gear only and spun the tires most if not all the quarter mile.
That original roadster was not very long on wheel base and in the
early 60's when I was racing I used to marvel at the very fine touch
on the steering wheel shown by both Red and Lyle.
The car had a VERY unique sound running thru the quarter mile.
I would get in my pickup right now this afternoon and drive a hundred
miles to watch (and hear) the car make one pass!!!
Just my 2cents worth.
Bill in Mesa,Arizona where its a very nice 70 degree afternoon.
