Yes, they have been around forever. Race cars almost always use a magnetic
plug because if there is any steel flowing around in the oil we want to see it.
A magnetic plug will usually catch some of that and it can be readily observed
when the plug is removed for an oil change.
Is it necessary? No. Is it nice to have? The better question is: Do you
care?
