On these old cars double declutch when shifting down and take your time
shifting up with a small pause in neutral, less than half a second will
do, just to match the revs. This will keep your synchro's alive. Just
treat it as a non-synchro box. I am so used to it that I also do it on
my more modern daily driver.

I was downshifting from third gear to second the

clutch to get it in the second gear. I have replaced
just about every part in the gearbox including the
second gear which I thought was the problem as the
synchro was bottoming out or touching the face of
gear it was well worn. Went yesterday for my first
test drive and all of the gears worked perfectly and
shifted very smoothly but when I try to downshift
from third to second it grinds terribly I had to
come to a complete stop to be able to shift it into
second gear. It shifts from 1st to 2nd no problem
third and fourth gears work very well as does
reverse. Do you have any suggestions? I couldnâ??t
find anything on the tolerances between the gears
would you have access to some kind of chart or spec
sheet? My other thought was the plunger in the
sliding hub might not be engaging on the first
motion shaft. Any thoughts or ideas for me to try!
