Well, you cannot use a normal SMITHS rheostat, it just has not got the wattage and will burn out instantly, causing a fire hazard. Anyway you cannot dim halogen bulbs very well as they will wear out very quickly. Just adjust the hight so you will not blind oncoming traffic or yourself in thick fog.
