Boot hinges

A friend of mine has a BJ8 and is installing a luggage rack that mounts to 
the boot lid hinges and uses a longer pin or bolt in place of the stock pin. 
Are 
the pins tapered and if so does he drive them out from the C/L of the car or 
vica versa?
