Ben,
On the BN1 the wiper arm is secured to the shaft with a locking collet and
nut. To release the arm from the shaft, loosen the locking nut immediately
under the arm which will allow the split collet to release its grip on the
shaft. Then the whole assembly can be pulled straight off the shaft with
very little effort.

To install the arm back on the shaft, make sure the drive rack travel (and
therefore the shaft) is positioned all the way over to the direction you
want the arms to park at. Then slip the arm, collet, locknut assembly onto
the shaft positioning the arm where you want it to rest. Then simply tighten
the locking nut which will cause the collet to grip the shaft securely.

I believe the system Michael Oritt was describing is the later self parking
system introduced with the BN2, with the spline peened to the wheel box
shaft. With that one, you release a little clip on the under side of the arm
that clips over the bottom of the spline, and pull straight off. If those
splines get chewed, they will not grip well, requiring either a remedy like
Michael described, or a new wheel box assembly..
