Hi Ned,
The apron as fitted to the six cylinder cars has four notches in the forward
vertical flange of the apron. These are supposed to line up with the four
mounting bolts going from brackets to bumper. They often do not and a bit of
trimming of the notches may be required. The apron is sandwiched between the
brackets and the bumper.
When the whole bumper/apron assembly is fitted to the car there should be a
reasonably constant (though certainly not exact) space between the apron and
the front shroud surface of about 5/8" to 3/4". (see picture att'd).
