Maybe I am wrong (big surprise there) or maybe am in a foul mood (another
great surprise) but doesn't this thread border on the absurd. What if, on
the production line, one of the Brits blows his nose and puts the Kleenex in
one of the frame members on the car that I eventually purchase. What if he
puts his initials in an obscure spot. Should that be replaced upon
restoration? I believe that if we adhere to the Moment/Anderson book and
Concours guidelines we have a chance of being correct. Except, of course for
those of us who have older restoration combo daily driver cars. And,
frankly, I am of the second position that whatever makes it goes is great.
Someone a while ago mentioned that Donald Healey was an advocate of doing
whatever was necessary to pinch another one tenth of a MPH out of a car and
didn't Geoff state in one of his books that often the production line guys
would grab the nearest part not caring if it belonged to a BN6 or BT7 just
that it fit and they were ready for the next one down the line?
To match specific cars to what happened on the specific date of production
is an exercise in futility. Get a life. To match to a range of vehicles
seems to me to be rational.
Don't get me wrong -- I think that the Concours guys are wonderful for us --
within boundaries. I applaud their efforts but let's not get carried away.

I think that Rich is simply trying to define the extent of his anomaly.
Say
one were to discover that ALL white BN 2's produced during a particular week
had black compartments, because the paint company had a fire and couldn't
supply enough white to completely paint the cars. Then if you were to
change your red car to white and the car was produced during the week in
question, then yes, you would have to paint it black, I would think, to make
it "representative" of that particular moment in time. A white car COULD'NT
have had a white compartment during that week.
Likewise if it were discovered that ALL existing BN 6's up to serial no
so-and-so originally had vinyl spare covers, factory documentation or not, I
would think a restoration of a car in that position in the production run
would require a vinyl cover as well.
Its all a matter of more research, more knowlege.
I think Gary is in the position of the Church leaders of the fifteenth
century
in which one HAD to say the earth was flat UNLESS PROVEN OTHERWISE. They
needed people like Rich to sail away and see if they fell off the edge.
