Hello,
My opinion is keep the original transmission as long as it has no
problems. If the overdrive or transmission needs rebuilding then a
Smitty conversion is a good alternative. Me, rather then fight the poor
quality of after market parts I would pull the original and go with a
five speed conversion. That way the original transmission sits on the
shelf with all original parts, not a Healey/BMC box full of Chinese
after market parts.
I know of problems with layshafts where the small gears are replaced
with a soft welded on replacements, junk bearings, balk rings that last
a few hundred miles, rebuilt overdrives where they don't replace the
clutch linings, etc.
I love my Healey and I don't think putting a Toyota gearbox in is bad
as long as I don't have to cut any sheet metal to install it. Notice
they use of the word I. The Nasty Boys site has some beautiful cars that
are works of art. I enjoy looking at them and would love to drive some
of the nicer ones. Having said that I would rather not cut an original
car unless it was headed for the junk yard anyway. JMHI.
