In the one or two hours a week I have to work on the
Healey, I have continued to run down some of the trans
issues. Here is an update:

1 - The Toyota gear box is back at the trans shop.
Something was missed during the rebuild. If you chuck
up the input shaft in a cordless drill, you can hear
some gear slop/bearing noises. They are tearing it
down today, so I should have more details soon.

2 - The clutch disk (Smitty sourced Chutch Net) is
toast! Don't know how I missed this the first time
around, but it must have been hiding under the
pressure plate arms. Two of the springs are broken.
Most look as if they have been rotating in their
housing and one looks like it was trying to escape -
not good. In addition there are radial cracks on the
disk, indicating that it was ready to implode in short
order. There was very little wear in the friction
material - as it was pretty new (1000 miles).
Clutchnet is replacing it for free - claimed that it
was a poor design and has been improved. Pictures of
the disk on the web (clutchnet.com) look different.

3 - Throwout bearing carrier (the part that surrounds
the input shaft - where the throwout bearing slides)
has been replaced as it looks like it made contact
with the pressure plate. Not sure why/how yet...
Just seems to be a little too long, so we may just
grind away a 1/4 inch.

4 - Oh and the really good news - when the car was on
the rack, we can hear what sounds like a missing tooth
on one of the spider gears in the rear end.
Ping-ping-ping.

And I thought that insurance cap of 2,500 miles was a
problem

The fun never stops.
