First of all, Bob, I am glad you still had fun and enjoyed Mosport. It
was great to see that you finally got to see the track from the driver's
seat!
I do find your comments on oil filter tightness curious. I have never
tightened an oil filter more than I can get with my hands. Granted, with
the car on a lift, you can manipulate yourself to get the best angle and
grip, so I am confident I get the filter tight enough. It always takes a
tool to remove and doesn't leak. I remember one of the oil filters I
used back in the day used to have instructions printed on the side, it
said something to the effect of "tighten until gasket touches, then an
additional 3/4 turn". I have always used that as a rule of thumb, and it
works for me. That 3/4 turn is about all I can get with my bare hands.
The spin on adapters we use have a large flat surface to accommodate the
sealing gasket of a wide variety of filter sizes, there is nothing to
capture the sides of the gasket as it gets tightened. I can easily see
how overtightening an oil filter can cause the glue that holds the
gasket to the filter to fail allowing the gasket to slide out of
position. Put a heat cycle on it with the vibration of the engine and
the results might just be receiving an unwanted nickname???
Just a thought...
