Amici,
I was thinking about the Piston Cup awarded =C2=A0during the=C2=A0Lime Rock=
Historic Festival this year, given to the =C2=A0behind the scenes mechanic=
who makes it all happen. =C2=A0 This has a bit of a parallel with the Kast=
ner Cup, since 25% of the award is based on car prep as Kas put in the rule=
s. =C2=A0 I would be remiss if I didn=E2=80=99t talk about how that part ap=
plies this year=C2=A0and how meaningful it is.
I had mentioned for a brief moment about holding flashlights for Dad when I=
was a kid, as a hint and a nod, but there=E2=80=99s a lot more to that sto=
ry. =C2=A0 I could go on for days about what I=E2=80=99ve learned and appli=
ed from all the coaching and teaching I=E2=80=99ve received throughout the =
years. =C2=A0But I=E2=80=99ll paint a couple of quick pictures instead. =C2=
=A0 =C2=A0Dad taught a lot about innovation and rule following at a young a=
ge. =C2=A0We are talking Pinewood Derby. =C2=A0 I would run tried and true =
in the normal kids class, and the parents would have an=E2=80=9Dexhibition=
=E2=80=9D class - which Dad would win. Followed by a rule change for next y=
ear. =C2=A0Meticulous preparation was kind of the point=E2=80=A6 not the ru=
le change; I guess not everybody has a lathe.)
On to Triumphs, which has huge depth for us, so it=E2=80=99s hard to give t=
he big picture in few words. =C2=A0 I live an hour away from Dad and I keep=
my car at his place=E2=80=A6 first, thanks even for that!! =C2=A0 I=E2=80=
=99ve said for a while that I=E2=80=99m the only knucklehead loving an hour=
from a car that takes this much work! =C2=A0 =C2=A0We=E2=80=99ve worked on=
Triunphs together all my life, and it=E2=80=99s a connection for us to say=
the least. =C2=A0When we first got the green number 80, we have been able =
to spend a TON more time together! =C2=A0 It=E2=80=99s been quite an effort=
over the years getting the green car solid and reliable. =C2=A0Bill Throop=
=E2=80=99s(the original owner)=C2=A0daughte Gretchenr, had reached out afte=
r I blew it up one time a few years ago and said,=E2=80=9D we were always s=
wearing at that car!=E2=80=9D =C2=A0 The swearing has decreased a huge amou=
nt over the last few years, and turned the other way into affection, and I =
think the car likes it. =C2=A0 You can imagine all of the help I receive fr=
om Dad behind the scenes, with him testing new ideas on his car, and then w=
e apply to the Green car, occasionally with me adding come color to a great=
idea. =C2=A0Needless to say about all of the phone calls or texts about =
=E2=80=9CI forgot to do XYZ=E2=80=9D when I was there, and Dad jumps to act=
ion since I=E2=80=99m not right around the corner. =C2=A0=C2=A0
I was telling Henry at the beginning=C2=A0of the cup weekend, that somethin=
g bad typically happens to me during the Lastner Cuo race itself. =C2=A0I=
=E2=80=99ve had gremlins pop up and mess with the carbs, which is typically=
ignition as we all know. =C2=A0Or Ignition problems that=E2=80=99s really =
carb problems, or worse..=C2=A0 =C2=A0At Road America, I had a brain proble=
m and could not tell my foot to press the brake pedal in turn 6 after I use=
d up all my gray cells. =C2=A0 Well, this year it came together for me. =C2=
=A0 The car has been absolutely rock solid all year long, running a few ext=
ra events more than usual. =C2=A0So Rock solid, the only issue was from a r=
ock to the radiator at Thompson! =C2=A0 I cannot tell you what a Herculean =
feat that has been especially with the Green #80 and its long history of be=
ing a really fast grenade! =C2=A0And so, I really have a huge amount of tha=
nks and appreciation to Phil Gott, my Dad, for getting us to the top, and h=
elping us win the Kastner Cup as a team!
Sincerely,Dave Gott
