Thanks for all of the responses. I measured the thickness of my old and new
thrust bearings today and saw that they were within about a = thousandth of
each other. As I had .003 to .004 before I knew I must be doing something
different. So I measured the clearance between the thrust bearing and the
crank with a feeler, as the workshop manual shows, and I have a nice .004
clearance. Measuring the end play with an indicator and pushing the crank
forward and back apparently is not a good way to measure the clearance,
which is what the .004 to .006 tolerance is for. SoIll leave the thrust
bearings as they are. The old ones which are about the same size worked
okay and the clearance is at the low end of the spec. Everything looks
pretty good!! I learned quite a bit to boot.
Thanks again, much appreciated.
