Just for the record I don't the Triumph engineers thought a thing about side 
impact.  BUT, that tube is most useful in compression when the suspension 
goes on to "CRASH" when it goes to dangle the tube is just a thing hanging 
on to stop the suspension from falling onto the hot cement. Shortening that 
tube will give you all the negative camber you ever heard of in your life.
