Actually I tore mine apart again today, but this time took the motor apart
and found one of the brush wires nearly frayed in half. Not enough wire left
to carry the current.

The wires are in the solenoid. Take the stamped steel cover off and there
are a pair of wires that appear to go to each side of the solenoid coil.
I'm pretty sure that's what Jack was talking about.
