GOOD tappets will have a very large radius ground on the base, the amount
(measured in FEET!) as determined by the grinder, & there will be a nice edge
break or slight chamfer around the edge of the base as well. The lobe is also
ground in at a very slight angle in order to promote rotation of the tappet.
If it doesn't turn, it won't live.
BTW the tappet base/cam lobe interface is the highest loaded point in an
engine. I've read figures quoted as being as high as 250,000-300,000 psi unit
load.
Many engine building/tuning books cover this issue.
Hope this helps'
