Yes to a bad experience.
Two years ago I stopped using Kendall GT-1 in my TR-4 race engine and
tried Mobil 1. I ran it for 3 race weekend and then pulled the pan and
timing cover to install a new cam. I found that the bearings looked great,
but everywhere that that the lubrication was by "splash" and the metal
contact was iron to iron or iron to steel
(like the cam and lifters or the timing chain tensioner to the chain or the
ends of the rocker arms to the valve stem tips) there was excessive wear.
This wear was WAY MORE THAN NORMAL. I have stopped using Mobil 1 and am back
to Kendall GT-1.
I the early 70s we were racing a Lotus Super 7 in SCCA San Fransisco
Regional and National events. We were given Castrol for free and used GTX,
GTR, and Castrol R. We were having a problem regularly welding the rocker
adjusting screw into the tops of the pushrods. This was not intentional! We
later found the cause was a mechanical mismatch of components. But without
changing any parts, changing from the Castrol to Kendall GT-1 stopped the
part failures! That experience made me a believer.
