I'm not entirely ready to give up on the idea of self pumping. The big
problem with external pumping systems is that they get real fussy. As Kas
already pointed out, the pump will be hard pressed to work when the system
is cold (even if you use a modern lubricant like redline that doesn't get
very stiff when it's cold). When the system is hot the oil moves easily.
Since the action of the diff throws oil to the outside, it might be
adequate to put a cooler on the cover with one end at the circumference
and the other in the center. Of course it might not do much more than a
finned cover, and from a complexity standpoint, just a deeper cover with
fins to both cool and increase oil capacity might be all that's necessary.
I'll give that a try first, after I stick a temp gauge in and see what's
what.

If that's the little U tube with fins that appears on everything from
fridges 
to Fords than I think we're talking about the same thing.  You can even
get 
them in chrome from aftermarket Harley shops.  Steve
