Fellow Foot Draggers-
Front suspension flex can cause myriad problems with bearings, hubs, links
and vertical links. Much of this flex can be reduced for little money
(although much labor). The first is to include a spacer between the inner and
outer wheel bearing ala MG. You heed to make up a spacer just a little to
short of the distance between the 2 bearings, then make additional shims to
adjust freeplay. This will make the spindle/bearing structure a lot more
rigid. The next mod is easier and probably even more effective. Remove the
rotor from the hub and extend these bolt holes out thru the face of the hub.
Be sure to utilize a long tap so that the threads are "continuous" even
though there is about a 1" gap between the 2 surfaces. Order up some grade 8
bolts threaded all the way up to the head of the bolt and cut them off so
that they are just short of the face of the hub. Utilize half height nuts
between the 2 inner surfaces jammed tight up against the inner part of the
face side of the hub to further reinforce the unit.
These mods will decrease flex markedly and stop the pads from being pushed
back into the calipers. Additionally it will decrease loading of the bearing
induced by the flex of the hub.
I have found some "racers" who have installed springs inside the calipers to
push the pads out against the rotors...this is probably not the "hot lick"
...well maybe it is the "hot" part though...
