hi craig, if the gnd. wire ck. didnt help, what about the old "amp meter is
a
fuse" trick. see if there is power going to the ign. sw. or the fuse block.
also, i have seen
the alt. short out, causing the big wire to the alt., and the amp. meter, to
fry.
you can by pass the amp. meter, if necessary, to get it running. i would be a
little worried about how bad the white power wire to the alt. is, as it goes
thru the
harness to the amp meter, ign. sw., and fuse block. if you dont have time to
unwrap the harness and ck. the big white wire out, you could disconnect it
at both ends and run a new # 10, or (2) #12 wires out side the harness for
now.
i realize ive simplified this, so call me if you want details on how to
either,
ck. things out, or make the bypass repair. bob smith, ohio 614 418 9911

p.s. im assuming the "wire to the alt. that smoked" was the big single
wire.

wires to the alternator smoked, stopped trying to start. I replaced the engine
compartment wiring harness with a NOS I had sitting around, now nothing at all
happens when I turn the key. have changed out the back of the ignition switch
a few times, no success. no lights or anything like no juice through the
switch. with battery hooked up I can short the starter and it will crank. any
thoughts? car hasn't been on the road in 35 years and I want to have it
driving in a week to take it up to the Glen....I'd previously put a different
engine in the car and it fired up but turned out to have a cracked head-
coolant coming out at the base of a spark plug. had never seen that one
before. thanks for any input :-)
