Peter,
If the rubber mounts/oval inserts on your wiper motor bracket are
undisturbed, there should be impressions on the bolt-head side where flat
washers were located. If undisturbed, just put it back together so the flat
washers are in the same positions as they were before you took everything
apart. If not, then you will need to play around a bit. Even if you took
things apart, you should be able to tell which direction each rubber grommet
was installed, because they will have taken a "set" over time. I have two
spare low-windshield wiper motors. (Don't ask me how that happened.) On
both, the ovals on the portion of the motor bracket closest to the motor are
transverse to the slots; on the "L"-shaped portion of the motor bracket,
they are parallel.
What I remember is, on an early car, both pieces of the wiper linkage
attaches to the eccentric arm on the motor. I think on the later cars, the
shorter arm attaches to the long arm, but I am not sure. In any event,
you're trying to align three points in space: The shaft on the eccentric
arm, the left wiper pivot and the right wiper pivot. I think that, if you
try to assemble it all, there is only one position where the eccentric arm
and both pivot arms align.
Try putting it together before you put everything else in. if you can. At
any rate, when you assemble it all, hook it up and put power to it with the
bolts just hand-tight, so they can move a bit if they need to. Then the
assembly should align itself without damaging anything.
