I have a 92 Ford F250 diesel with about 180,000 miles that has developed a
problem with the brakes.
When you push the brake pedal down it just stays wherever you lift your foot
off, and the brakes stay set to that pressure. I inspected under the dash
and don't see a place for, or remnants of, a return spring there. A couple
of years ago I replaced the master cylinder and don't think that is a
problem. At this point I am assuming that the vacuum amplifier is defective
in some way. I have checked the vacuum lines and there is plenty of vacuum.
It apparently has a second vacuum pump for some reason that appears to be
connected to a braking accessory of some sort, but not connected to the
pedal. Any other suggestions before I spend a few hours changing the
vacuum amplifier?
The other problem I see once in a while is that the right front corner bobs
up and down under hard braking after driving it for a while. I don't really
suspect the brakes, and it seemed to improve once I installed a new set of
front shocks. Whoever put the last set on did not install the metal washers
on either side of the rubber grommets ??? I suspect I threw away a new set
of shocks when I tossed those out. I am wondering about suspension
bushings, but I am not really sure where to start on this one. Any ideas?
