Burglary suspect nabbed after chase

SEASCAPE - One man was taken into custody and a
collectible car loaded with stolen goods recovered
following a bizarre residential burglary that turned
into a high-speed chase Tuesday afternoon.

The incident unfolded after deputies got a call about
a suspicious man seen entering the residence at 510
Sumner Ave. at 12:20 p.m., Sgt. Joe Reyes of the Santa
Cruz County Sheriff's Office said. A male suspect
apparently grabbed a cache of stereo equipment and
other belongings from inside the home and loaded them
into a 1969 Datsun 2000 convertible sports car that
was parked in the garage.

The white male suspect - who was not named - fled the
scene in the mint condition silver car along Sumner as
deputy Damon Hancock was responding to the scene from
the opposite direction, Reyes said. Once Hancock
spotted the car - which an alert neighbor had reported
to 911 dispatchers - he turned around and gave
pursuit. A short chase ensued along Sumner toward Via
Trinita, Reyes said.

The suspect turned into the secluded Camp St. Francis
at the end of Sumner and charged through the grounds.

The suspect raced across a lawn in the center of the
grounds and blasted through a wall of tall hedges, the
car coming to rest straddling the Union Pacific
railroad tracks. He then leapt from the car and fled
on foot, Reyes said.

Deputies quickly established a command post and
perimeter. Within an hour, deputy Peter Hanson spotted
the suspect in the Seascape Resort and managed to take
him into custody. All the belongings and the Datsun
were recovered.
