Dear Roadster Lovers Around the World!
Sorry for the delay in recapping our weekend at Road Atlanta (RA). Lots
going of work at work and home, go figure.
Perhaps I should title this update the Walter Muddy update! Gayle and I
drove up Friday to Road Atlanta (RA) to check out where Classic Motorsports
had placed our assigned club corral and set up the base camp. We were
pleased to see several members there already- most arrive on Saturday. Phil
Hall even made a hand sewn large SEROC banner. He now knows how Betsy Ross
felt.
Saturday started with tornado watches for most of the south and hard blowing
rain in our area. This lasted until 1:00 p.m. and turned our corral into a
muddy mess. Red Georgia mud was everywhere. Now I know why I've never cared
for red wall tires. I was able to procure maintenance floor mats from my
Nissan dealer and passed them out liberally; sure glad we had them.
More members arrived and we were up to at least 7 or 8 cars. Not bad
considering the terrible weather conditions. In the afternoon we had a
continuous line of people braving the mud to talk to us about our roadsters
and their memories of previously owned roadsters from times gone by.
We BBQed our traditional tire burgers and fed the wet, muddy huddled
masses:-) We also handed out our event t-shirts. It was our Fifth
Anniversary as a club and for gathering at RA every spring. A big thanks to
Richard Brown for providing most of the BBQ stuff, every year.
Classic Motorsports (CM) summoned us to their large tent and to our surprise
it was for a concourse. I always thought a mud bath was to enhance cosmetic
beauty, but in our roadsters case: Not! We cleaned up as best we could and
entered the competition with some really great cars, old and new. There must
have been at least 10 to 15 cars and CM gave awards in 8 categories. We did
y'all proud! We won 3 first places out of the 8 categories! And Paul
Brouillette, that drove in from Louisiana (about 10 hrs), and his 68 - 1600
will be featured in a CM mag later this year. SEROC will also be featured
sometime, as well.
We also went out and did club laps on a wet track. lots of fun! I'll bet
Paul Brouillette is still grinning:-)
Saturday P.M. saw a late club super at Applebee's in Gainesville (also a 5
year tradition). We had our free raffle of parts and goodies donated by our
members, Dean at Fairlady (Thanks again Dean!) and CM mag. Thanks also to
Stan Weatherall who has a sign shop (Sign it Now!) in South Carolina and
donated a SEROC event banner. Everyone who attended the weekend signed the
banner and we had a drawing for it. Since our club is free (as in no dues
and carb free) we have a small raffle of a rotating roadster part. No, it's
not a wheel or a dizzy, actually a rad tower from a 1600. (won by Ron &
Renee Ayers from St. Pertersburg, FL) We raise a few bucks and I send the
winner of the raffle a title for the part as if it were a car title. Silly,
but fun!
Sunday was glorious, sunny, 73 with a light breeze and a little mud under
foot. Autocrossing a Lotus, driving a Mini, more club laps, car vendors and
a visit to the pits were a few of the activities our members enjoyed into
the afternoon.
We loaded up in the late afternoon (never thought I'd get packed due to all
the visitors to our corral, a great delay!) and headed southwest for
Montgomery.
Thanks again to all our great members for facing the bad weather and showing
up for a great time. We had people come from Ohio, Virginia, Florida, the
Carolinas, Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama. For those who were halted by
weather and other circumstances..... we missed you.
