A local guy that does a lot of resto work told me his method which sounded
very reasonable - take a long piece of thin guage safety / utility wire with
some gun cleaning patches twisted into a loop at one end.  Saturate with
WD-40 and pull it through the housing to clean out the old crud - repeat
with fresh patches until the patches come through clean.  Then apply thick
coat of white lithium grease to the cable and slip it into the housing.
