OT - a freinds pathfinder

my friend has an 88 pathfinder with a 6 in it. he has changed the cap/rotor,
plugs, plug wires (changed after the problem started). he is saying that it
has no power and that he has to give it gas when he starts it. he wants to
set the timing on it this weekend. would timing be the reason for this? he
says it is basically gutless now. this has probably been going on for a few
weeks now. any help is appreciated.
