Welcome and all that stuff!

Most (mine included) do not have this hose hooked up for the very reason you
mentioned.  It makes a mess out of the carbs.  Just stick a breather filter
on the end of the hose and motor on.

If you are sensitive to smog control they make an oil separator that you can
install between the valve cover and the air cleaner.  You can find them at
just about any hot rod supply.  If you are really serious about the smog
control, bend over and grab your ankles!  The necessary equipment required
to do this is going to cost you a fortune.  So, unless you are going to go
whole hog on this, I wouldn't be too concerned about the breather.
